Smaug, also known as Smaug the Dragon, Smuag the Stupendous among others, is the secondary antagonist of the Peter Jackson's Hobbit film trilogy and the main antagonist of J.R.R. Tolkien's 1937 novel, The Hobbit. He is a minor antagonist in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the titular main antagonist of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smuag, and a supporting antagonist of The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies.
He was a fire dragon that lived in Middle-Earth during the Third Age and is considered to be the last "great" dragon to exist in Middle-Earth. He was drawn towards the extreme wealth amassed by the Dwarves of the Lonely Mountain during the rule of King Thror, and nearly destroyed the entire city of Dale and took over the Lonely Mountain driving the surviving Dwarves into exile. He is portrayed as greedy, sadistic, ruthless, psychopathic, arrogant, intelligent and violent. He is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch.
