Sauron, known also as Mairon and Gorthaur is a fallen Maia and the creator of the One Ring of Power. He served also as the Dark Lord during the second and third ages, after his master Melkor/Morgoth's downfall, taking Mordor as his land, and becoming thus its lord, and building Barad-dur. He was also the Necromancer of Dol Guldur during the Hobbit.

He serves as the main antagonist of the Lord of the Rings book by J.R.R Tolkien, and the film adaptations by Peter Jackson, serving as the main antagonist of The Fellowship of the Ring and the Return of the King and the secondary antagonist of the Two Towers. He serves also as the tertiary antagonist of the Hobbit trilogy by Peter Jackson, serving as a senary antagonist in An Unexpected Journey, the tertiary antagonist of Desolation of Smaug and the quaternary antagonist of Battle of Five Armies. He also served as the secondary antagonist of the Silmarillion, the secondary antagonist of the Children of Hurin and ultimately the secondary antagonist of the History of Middle-Earth.
